Our Story

From two libraries to a global organization for children’s literacy.

The Library Project began in 2006 with a simple goal: to create two libraries for children in need. What started as a small volunteer effort has grown into a global literacy organization that donates books, builds libraries, trains teachers, supports families, and partners with local nonprofits to bring reading opportunities to children around the world.

In the beginning, The Library Project was just an idea shared by a small group of friends who wanted to make a practical difference. That idea took shape in Dalian, China, where two libraries were created for children living in an orphanage and shelter. With donated books, fundraising support from friends and family, and a belief that children deserve spaces filled with learning and possibility, those first libraries became the foundation for everything that followed.

The Library Project began in 2006 with a simple goal: to create two libraries for children in need. What started as a small volunteer effort has grown into a global literacy organization that donates books, builds libraries, trains teachers, supports families, and partners with local nonprofits to bring reading opportunities to children around the world.

Our first library in an orphanage in Dalian, China.

What happened next was bigger than anyone expected. Support came quickly, and it became clear that access to books was a challenge in many communities. As The Library Project grew, so did its understanding of what children, teachers, and schools truly needed. A library could not simply be a room with books on shelves. It needed to be welcoming, relevant, well managed, and integrated into a child’s daily learning experience.

That belief helped shape The Library Project’s approach. Over time, the organization expanded beyond traditional library donations to include Reading Rooms, Reading Corners, Children’s Literacy Bags, teacher training, and support for families and caregivers. Each program was built around a simple idea: children are more likely to read when they have access to quality books, encouragement from adults, and spaces that make reading feel engaging and meaningful.

A Reading Room donated to a rural elementary school.

For many years, The Library Project’s work was closely associated with China, where it built a strong track record supporting rural schools and underserved communities. That work remains an important part of the organization’s history and identity. It helped refine the programs, build long-term relationships, and demonstrate that practical, well-designed literacy interventions can create real results for children.

As the organization matured, so did its vision. The Library Project is no longer focused on just one country. Today, it operates in multiple countries and partners with local nonprofit organizations to support literacy programs in the communities it knows best. This global partnership model allows The Library Project to support children in diverse settings while staying grounded in local knowledge, local language, and local leadership.

This evolution reflects one of the most important lessons in The Library Project’s story: lasting impact is strongest when it is built with communities, not simply delivered to them. By working with local partners, schools, teachers, and families, The Library Project helps create programs that are practical, scalable, and rooted in children’s needs.

Since 2006, The Library Project has grown from two small libraries into an organization that has helped bring books and literacy support to over a million children. Along the way, it has remained committed to a clear mission: improving children’s literacy by increasing access to books, supporting educators, and helping communities create stronger reading cultures.

At its heart, The Library Project is still driven by the same spirit that launched those first two libraries. It is the belief that books matter, that literacy changes lives, and that every child deserves the opportunity to read, learn, and imagine a better future.

Our story is still being written. With every new library, every donated book, every trained teacher, and every new partnership, The Library Project continues to grow its impact and extend its mission to more children around the world.

Our Team

Meet Our Team

The Library Project has an amazing full-time staff team that strives to improve education one book at a time. Our highly dedicated teams work together to create an organization that positively impacts the lives of underprivileged children. 100% of our program teams are locals. For this reason, they understand the challenges that each country holds and are able to provide hundreds of libraries to rural communities annually.

How We Do It

From the ground up, dedicated and passionate TLP team members work closely with local governments, boards of education, local communities, teachers, students, volunteers, and donors. We strive to involve our volunteers and donors in almost every donation aspect, as transparency is a cornerstone of The Library Project. Our entire team is involved in every aspect of our library donations. A great deal of coordinated effort is involved with our library donations. All the team’s hard work is well worth the effort with just a single smile from a deserving child.

Our Approach to Governance

At The Library Project, we believe our team has a voice in its internal governance. We created the Internal Board of Directors, which is made up of our organization’s internal leadership. Every day, this team works together to set the direction of the organization and also sits on many of our external boards as non-voting members. Their voice helps to strengthen our external boards’ relevance and achieve a greater programmatic impact.

About Us

Our Mission

At The Library Project, we believe that every child deserves access to books, a safe place to read, and the chance to reach their full potential through education. We work to improve children’s literacy by building libraries in rural schools and community centers, training teachers to inspire young readers, and helping parents nurture a love of reading at home.

Who We Are

Founded in 2006, The Library Project began with a simple idea: to donate two libraries to orphanages in Dalian, China. What started as a small act of generosity has grown into a movement that has provided thousands of libraries and millions of books to children globally.

Today, our team works closely with local governments, schools, community centers, and partner organizations to ensure that every library we build reflects the needs of its community. Our approach combines access to high-quality local language books, training, and long-term monitoring. This creates environments where reading becomes a lifelong habit.

What We Do

We build more than libraries; we build opportunities for children to learn, grow, and dream. Through programs such as our Reading Rooms, Reading Corners, and Literacy Bags, we provide access to resources that meet children and communities where they are.

Our Teacher Training programs equip educators with practical strategies to engage students in reading, while our Global Literacy Partnerships expand our reach beyond borders, supporting schools and NGOs around the world.

We measure success not just by the number of books donated, but by the children reading them; their growing curiosity, confidence, and imagination. You can explore our results on Our Impact page.

Our Partners

Our work is made possible through partnerships with individuals, companies, students, and NGOs who share our belief that literacy changes lives. Together, we are creating brighter futures, one book at a time. If you would like to learn how you can get involved, you can visit our Partner With Us page.

Our Vision

We envision a world where every child, regardless of background or geography, can read, learn, and achieve their individual potential. Each library we build brings us closer to that vision, opening doors to education, equality, and opportunity through the simple, transformative power of books.

Our Book Content Core Values in Action
