Spotlight on Reading Rooms – Transforming Schools into Literacy Hubs

July 3, 2025In Inside TLP2 Minutes

In the first half of 2025, The Library Project established five new Reading Rooms across rural schools in China. Each Reading Room represents a major investment in a child’s educational journey. A typical Reading Room features thousands of books, child-friendly furniture, tables, and chairs for group learning, along with educational resources designed to create a welcoming environment that encourages students to read and explore.

The impact of a Reading Room extends far beyond the physical bookshelves. For students, it creates a safe and inspiring environment where reading becomes an integral part of daily school life. Teachers report that students are more eager to borrow books, spend time in the library, and participate in reading activities. For many children, this is their first experience with a real library—an experience that can ignite a lifelong love of learning.

Reading Rooms also support teachers. As part of our program, educators receive training on integrating the library into their lessons. This ensures the Reading Room is not simply a static space but a living resource that enhances classroom teaching. From organizing reading circles to incorporating story-based learning into subjects such as science or history, teachers are empowered to utilize the library as a tool for engagement.

By transforming under-resourced classrooms into literacy hubs, Reading Rooms make a lasting difference in the educational experience of thousands of students. In 2025, these five new Reading Rooms have already reached over 1,000 children, providing them with opportunities to grow both academically and personally.
