The Library Project Donates Arabic Storybooks for Syrian Refugee Children in Lebanon
The Library Project has made our first grant to Jusoor, one of our Global Partners in Lebanon, to expand access to Arabic-language children’s books for displaced Syrian children.
These books will support children aged 3-10 and will include a carefully selected collection of picture books, early readers, folk tales, illustrated chapter books, and contemporary children’s literature. The collection encourages reading for enjoyment rather than formal classroom instruction.
For Syrian refugee children, access to Arabic storybooks is far more than an educational resource; it is a connection to their language, identity, and culture. While many children continue to speak Arabic at home, opportunities to read high-quality Arabic literature are often limited. Storybooks help bridge this gap by expanding vocabulary, strengthening reading fluency, and introducing children to the richness of written Arabic in an engaging and accessible way.
Reading in a child’s mother tongue also plays an important role in social and emotional well-being. Stories provide familiarity, comfort, and continuity during times of displacement, while helping children explore emotions, build empathy, develop imagination, and strengthen critical thinking.
The new collection will be integrated into daily reading activities, library corners, and literacy sessions across Jusoor’s education centers, ensuring that hundreds of children have regular access to age-appropriate Arabic literature throughout the school year. By fostering a love of reading in their first language, this initiative supports literacy development while preserving children’s connection to their cultural identity.
