On September 28, 2025, The Library Project, with support from the Peking University Guanghua School of Management Class of 2005, donated a Reading Room to a rural elementary school in Chongqing, China. This small school, serving just 78 students from grades 1 through 6, now has a dedicated library that will benefit the entire student body. Three volunteers from the Class of 2005 joined the donation celebration, sharing personal stories of how reading shaped their childhoods and responding to students’ thoughtful questions with experiences that connected learning to real-life skills.

The Reading Room offers the school access to over 1,000 children’s books, colorful furniture, and bookshelves, creating a welcoming space where students can read, explore, and grow. Designed to encourage both independent and group learning, Reading Rooms transform empty classrooms into vibrant libraries that spark curiosity and promote a culture of reading. For more information about this program, please visit our Reading Room page.

All teachers at the school will have the opportunity to take part in a one-year teacher training program. Training equips educators with strategies to integrate the library into their daily lessons and encourages the active use of new resources. The program also includes ongoing monitoring and evaluation to ensure the Reading Room is well utilized and has a measurable impact on both teaching and learning outcomes.

The books provided in the Reading Room are selected according to The Library Project’s Book Content Core Values. These values emphasize STEAM education, inclusion and diversity, environmental protection, girls’ education, promoting world peace, and nurturing the heart and mind. By curating titles with these principles in mind, the Reading Room encourages literacy while also exposing children to ideas and perspectives that inspire empathy, creativity, and critical thinking.

“We are grateful to the Peking University Guanghua School of Management Class of 2005 for their support of children’s literacy,” said Tom Stader, Executive Director & Founder of The Library Project. “Their generosity, combined with their willingness to share stories and engage with students, ensures that this Reading Room is more than just a space for books; it is a place where children are encouraged to learn and dream.”

The Library Project remains committed to improving literacy and educational opportunities in underserved communities. With the continued support of partners like the Peking University Guanghua School of Management Class of 2005, more schools across China can gain access to the resources and encouragement needed to foster a lifelong love of reading.
