The Role of Children’s Literacy Bags in Supporting Learning at Home

August 8, 2025In Inside TLP1 Minutes

Classroom learning is vital, but a child’s literacy development often depends on what happens beyond school hours. That is why The Library Project created the Children’s Literacy Bag program. In 2025, 935 students have already received Children’s Literacy Bags filled with age-appropriate storybooks and resources to share with their families.

These bags provide more than books—they create opportunities for family engagement. Parents and guardians are encouraged to read together with their children, helping to build a culture of literacy in the home. For many families, this is the first time they have had children’s books at home, and the Children’s Literacy Bag becomes a treasured resource.

Teachers also notice a difference. Students who receive Children’s Literacy Bags often return to school more confident and motivated to read. By combining access to school libraries with at-home reading opportunities, children experience a more robust and consistent literacy environment.

The Children’s Literacy Bag program also reflects The Library Project’s commitment to equity. Rural communities often face significant challenges in accessing books. By bringing books directly into homes, we help close that gap and ensure that children, regardless of background, have the chance to develop reading skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

With additional support from donors and partners, we plan to expand this program further in the coming months.
