Teacher Training
Introduction
At The Library Project, we recognize the critical role educators play in the success of our libraries. We offer comprehensive training and ongoing support to ensure that teachers and administrators are well-equipped to make the most of the resources provided.
Librarian Training
We provide a specialized librarian training course tailored for teachers and administrators who manage their school’s library. This course covers essential aspects such as:
- Library Maintenance: Teaching the best practices for caring for books and library facilities.
- Utilization in Teaching: How to effectively use library books in the classroom setting to enhance lesson plans.
- Staff Involvement: Strategies to involve the entire teaching staff in maintaining and utilizing the library resources.
On-site Training
Our on-site training sessions bring practical skills and theoretical knowledge to life, tailored specifically for teachers who will conduct children’s reading lessons. Key components include:
- Skill Development: Focus on cultivating children’s interests and independent reading skills.
- Practical Implementation: Hands-on training that helps teachers integrate these new skills into their everyday teaching.
Online Training
To provide continuous professional support, we offer:
- Accessible Online Resources: Regular online video training sessions are available to teachers across all program regions.
- Focused Training Modules: These modules cover reading skills, teaching methods, and text analysis, directly linking with teachers’ daily activities.
Ongoing Supports
We foster a supportive community through:
- Digital Communication Platforms: Using tools like Tencent QQ and WeChat, we create groups for school librarians, principals, and teachers to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration.
- Problem-Solving: These platforms allow teachers to share challenges and receive advice from experienced staff and external experts, ensuring they have the support needed to overcome obstacles in library management and reading instruction.
Through these comprehensive training and support initiatives, The Library Project ensures that educators are prepared and continually supported in their efforts to foster a culture of reading and learning in their schools. This holistic approach enhances the effectiveness of our library donations and maximizes their impact on students’ educational journeys.
Our Books
A Comprehensive Booklist Promoting Children’s Literacy
At The Library Project, we are committed to fostering children’s literacy through a meticulously curated selection of books. Our book selection process is guided by the “full nutritional reading” principle, ensuring that each booklist is tailored to suit the developmental needs of the children it serves.
Principles of Selection
Our selection criteria are based on a deep understanding of children’s reading ages, psychological features, and knowledge structures. We ensure that the books we choose are rich in content and resonate positively with children, encompassing a wide variety of subjects presented in a scientifically balanced proportion.
Special Focus on Vulnerable Groups
Recognizing the unique needs of left-behind children, we have increased the number of books addressing key topics such as children’s psychology, protection, and health. These books are selected to provide support and guidance, helping to bridge the gap in access to critical information and emotional support for these children.
Goals of the Booklist
Our comprehensive booklist aims to:
- Enhance Emotional Development: By featuring books that are positive in emotion, we help nurture a healthy psychological outlook among young readers.
- Expand Knowledge Horizons: The variety of subjects helps broaden children’s understanding of the world.
- Enhance STEAM Education: Books are carefully chosen to cultivate curiosity and a robust scientific temperament, emphasizing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
Through our efforts in compiling this booklist, The Library Project seeks to empower children with the tools they need to thrive academically and personally, promoting a lifelong love of reading and continuous learning.
Graded Book List
The Graded Book List facilitates book management and usage by aligning with students’ reading levels. Books are color-coded according to their grade level, simplifying students’ ability to select and borrow appropriate books as needed independently. This system enhances accessibility and fosters autonomous reading among students.
Our Book Content Core Values
The core values guiding the content of our books are fundamental to The Library Project. These values shape the libraries we establish, the programs we offer, and the training we conduct. Each decision we make is informed by these principles, ensuring our efforts align with our mission to enhance education and enrich lives.
These core values ensure that our libraries are more than just collections of books—they are dynamic resources that foster critical thinking, empathy, and a commitment to positive global citizenship.

1,489,000 Children Benefited
To date, we have impacted over one million children by providing access to libraries in their rural primary schools. The beautiful thing about a school library is it lives, it stays just as relevant on day one as it will ten years into the future. Because of this new children annually gain access to these beautiful libraries and the total impact a library has on a community grows annually.
1,485 Reading Rooms
Reading Rooms provide an entire school with access to high-quality educational books. The schools that receive Reading Rooms are generally larger schools in rural communities. These schools have between 200-900 students in total, who each gain access to the school’s Reading Room.
6,711 Reading Corners
Reading Corners provides an entire classroom with access to high-quality STEAM books (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Reading Corners go directly into the classroom, providing students and teachers easy access to their library.
45,000 Teachers Trained
Training is critical to the long-term success of a library donation. Teachers at rural elementary schools receive training on how to manage their new libraries. This training course is the first day of a one-year relationship between The Library Project team that ensures each and every library we donate operates at the highest level. Training is a critical part of every library donation.
4,800 Literacy Bags
Literacy Bags provide a child with access to high-quality educational books. These books are theirs, and theirs alone, to be brought home. These books often represent the first steps in having a home library.
2,345,000 Books Donated
The Library Project provides early exposure to engaging and interesting STEAM material, giving children the opportunity to spark their interest in these fields. Our STEAM resources are education-based, so children will always be learning practical knowledge through the items in our libraries. We have books that teach the engineering behind construction vehicles to stories that teach why fruit seeds won’t grow in your belly. By providing access to STEAM resources we give children in rural communities a chance to dive into the world in which they live in a new, fascinating way.
300 Active Partner Schools
We work with small elementary schools in rural communities in China and Vietnam. These small schools exist in truly remote areas, where infrastructure is lacking. These schools, often called satellite schools, exist so that every child has the opportunity to attend school. Without these schools, children would have to travel long distances with limited infrastructure to get to a larger school in the city center.

Vietnam
Our Work in Vietnam
The Library Project has been supporting schools and communities in Vietnam since 2006, implementing programs such as Reading Rooms, Reading Corners, and Literacy Bags. To date, we have donated libraries to more than 125 rural elementary schools and 35 orphanages, reaching over 25,000 children across the country.
Our programs provide students with access to quality, age-appropriate books and vibrant learning spaces that inspire creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of reading. By working closely with educators, local partners, and community leaders, we ensure that every donation strengthens literacy and learning outcomes.
The Library Project operates in Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Long, An Giang, Binh Phuoc, and Tay Ninh, with our Vietnam office located in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Need
Education in Vietnam is divided into five levels: pre-primary, primary, intermediate, secondary, and higher education. The government’s focus is on improving general knowledge, developing a skilled workforce, and nurturing young talent. As one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies, Vietnam continues to modernize its education system to meet global standards, with an increasing emphasis on English-language learning and international curriculum development.
Despite these advances, challenges persist. Public schools remain underfunded, and only half of primary school tuition is subsidized by the government. While enrollment rates are high, the quality of education in rural and remote areas often falls below national standards. Many students drop out after the fifth grade because families cannot afford the costs of continuing education.
The Library Project works alongside schools, teachers, and local governments to help close these gaps. By building libraries, providing high-quality books, and supporting teachers and parents, we help ensure that more children—especially in rural communities—have access to the educational resources they need to read, learn, and thrive.
China
Our Work in China
The Library Project has been operating in China since 2006, implementing our core programs: Reading Rooms, Reading Corners, Book Donations, and Literacy Bags.
By the end of 2019, we had donated 1,372 Reading Rooms and 3,225 Reading Corners, placing more than 2 million books into the hands of over 1 million children. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our partners, volunteers, and dedicated team. Today, The Library Project donates, on average, one new program every day in China, an achievement that continues to inspire our work.
We currently operate in 29 provinces across China, focusing on underfunded rural elementary schools, orphanages, and community centers in some of the country’s most remote regions. Our growth is driven by our donors, who often choose the regions they wish to support. Provinces include Anhui, Beijing, Chongqing, Gansu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Hubei, Inner Mongolia, Jiangsu, Jilin, Liaoning, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shandong, Shanghai, Shanxi, Sichuan, Xinjiang, and Yunnan.
The Library Project’s China office is based in Xi’an.
Our Programs in China
Our work in China is built around programs that give children the resources, spaces, and support they need to develop strong reading skills. From building libraries to providing take-home books, literacy activities, and training for teachers and parents, each program is designed to ensure every child has the opportunity to read, learn, and thrive.
Reading Rooms
Reading Rooms transform existing school spaces into bright, inviting libraries filled with books, tables, chairs, and shelving designed for children. Working with local education departments, we repurpose unused classrooms into inspiring learning spaces that serve the entire school.
Reading Corners
Reading Corners bring books directly into classrooms and community centers, giving children and teachers access to diverse, high-quality titles. Each Reading Corner creates a welcoming place where children can explore, learn, and grow every day.
Book Donations
Book Donations strengthen existing school libraries by providing new, high-quality books that keep collections fresh and engaging. Each donation helps students discover new stories, explore new ideas, and continue their journey as lifelong readers.
Literacy Bags
Literacy Bags give children their very own collection of books to take home; their first personal library. Distributed through schools and local partners, these bags help families build a reading culture that continues beyond the classroom.
The Need
China’s education system is one of the largest in the world, serving millions of students across vast and diverse regions. In 2019, the Ministry of Education reported more than 1.5 million students entering compulsory education. The government continues to prioritize raising education levels nationwide, with goals to expand higher education and improve access to quality schooling at every level.
The expansion of primary education has been one of China’s most significant achievements. Before 1949, only about 20% of school-age children were enrolled in primary education. By 1985, that number had risen to 96%, with more than 830,000 primary schools established across the country. As of 2018, 96% of people over age 15 are literate — a remarkable increase from just 20% in 1949.
Despite this progress, disparities persist. Most of China’s population lives in rural areas, where over 95% of elementary schools are located. Many rural schools still face challenges such as underfunding, limited access to educational resources, and difficulty retaining qualified teachers.
The Library Project works within this landscape to help close the gap between urban and rural education. By building libraries, providing books, and training teachers, we ensure that children in rural schools and communities have access to the tools and opportunities they need to read, learn, and thrive.
