"Level 3" Elementary Schools

Lantian County

A "Level 3" elementary school is the lowest level that an elementary school can hold in China. This usually means that it is under-funded, remote, and has few educational resources found at the school.

Level 3 elementary schools tend to act as satellite schools for larger Level 1 and Level 2 schools. They receive funding directly from their parent schools. Most Level 3 elementary schools were initially funded by the local community so that their children may live at home during grades 1-2. Once a child reaches the 3rd grade they will usually move to a Level 1 or Level 2 school and live in a dormatory year round.

Lantian County is located in Xi'an in the Shaanxi Province. Lantian County is accessible by highway. It takes about 1 hour to reach Lantian City. Roads vary in quality when driving from Lantian City to more remote towns and villages.

Their are 519 villages in Lantian County with a network of under-funded elementary schools that are in need of quality Chinese language children's books. There are 117 elementary schools in need of a library.

OUR GOAL

About The Library Project

The Library Project will be providing Xi Gou Elementary School with a "Reading Corner". A Reading Corner is a donation of 500 Chinese language children's books, bookshelves, plants and a globe. A Reading Corning sits in the corner of a classroom and is intended to go into elementary schools that do not have an additional room for a full library. We will also provide a short Librarian Training Course for the school administration on how to manage their new library. In most cases, smaller schools have never had additional teaching aids beyond text books.

The Library Project will also brighten up the classroom by having the children paint their desks and benches, transforming their dark classroom into a bright area to learn and grow, (And to read their new books!)

The Library Project donates books and libraries to under financed elementary schools in China. They believe education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty that exists in the developing world. As they see it, education is change.

Their goal is to develop The Library Project into an organization that helps empower millions of children every year through the gift of education. This goal will take an enormous amount of dedication, planning, and hard work. They need your help.

To get involved, please check out their website at www.library-project.org.
