THE LIBRARY PROJECT

A Letter From Thomas Stader

Why Do Orphanages Need Book?
Books of all kinds play a critical role in all children’s development. Unfortunately, there are very few books beyond children’s school books found in most orphanages.

The Libraries
The first two orphanges that will benefit from The Library Project are in Dalian, China.

Hello Everyone,

I am very pleased to announce Nomadic Marketing's newest undertaking: The Library Project.

On a personal level, I’m very proud of The Library Project. Over the next two months Nomadic Marketing will be building a number of libraries to serve small orphanages in northeastern China.

The Library Project has a very simple starting goal: to build quality low cost libraries in two local orphanages in Dalian, China.

What is low cost? Between $50 and $250 apiece.
How are we able to do this? Easy: developing partnerships with zero overhead.

I’ll explain in detail how we are able to provide libraries at such a low cost later, but first I’d like to talk about why providing books to orphanages is so important.

Education is a basic necessity today, and like food, clothing and shelter it is the key to an individual’s survival in today’s world.

Most Asian orphanages are in dire need of resources. These resources can range from simple food and water rations, to basic school supplies, to proper sanitation and medical care.

These are the realities for children living without parents in a third world country: the dual burden of having limited basic human needs combined with the modern need for education to truly survive in the modern world. Nomadic Marketing wants to provide one very simple need to these underprivileged: a quality library for the children living in these orphanages.

The two orphanage “libraries” that we have researched thus far have no more than ten books for the children to read beyond their simple textbooks. Of those ten books, probably five are written at a child’s reading level, and of those five there may be only one that these young people are really interested in reading.

Let’s face it: children don’t want to read debates concerning international economic politics; they want to read Harry Potter.

Over the past eight months Nomadic has built partnerships with two local companies and one non-profit charity to make The Library Project a reality.

Aston Education is a local English language school that will be holding a book drive over a two-week period. They have a student base of over 5,000 students and we are expecting to receive a minimum of 2,000 books from this book drive.

Jinan Live is a local online community in the city of Jinan in China. They recently had a book drive and collected 100 mostly English language books for the libraries.

They are both partnering with The Dalian Charity Federation, a local NGO, to use a large youth volunteer network that will utilize the donated books, bookshelves, tables, chairs and posters to build the libraries over a two-day period. Nomadic Marketing brought these three organizations together. But, we need your help to continue partnering symbiotic zero-cost organizations like this.

By partnering with these companies and organizations we are able to keep our overhead very low. How low? Zero. Zip. Nada. We have no overhead to pay for. Aston Education has dedicated over a thousand man-hours to this project. Aston Education’s City Directors, Adam and Victor, as well as their School Managers, their Assistant Managers, the front desk staff at each school and every teacher in their network - will lend a hand educating their students on the need for books to be donated to The Library Project, and teachers will also help collect the books over a two week period.

This project would be financially impossible without their generous contribution of labor.

But, we need more than their kind donations of labor to achieve these goals. How can you help?

Nomadic's role is not only to bring these organizations together, but also to provide the secondary items necessary for educating these children. Nomadic has already helped take on the cost of the necessary bookshelves, tables, chairs and study mats. And, these children need more books and secondary library furnishings to help facilitate their education. This is where Nomadic really needs your help.

I have a fundraising goal of getting sponsors for a mere $150 for each of these two libraries.

That is less than .45 cents a day per year to fund a small library’s founding that will provide a comfortable space for orphaned children to learn to read, write and begin a journey to self-sufficiency through education.

It is Nomadic Marketing’s goal to buy three bookshelves, one table, two chairs and a few study mats for each orphanage, and we need your help to begin this program. Any extra funds will be used to develop more library resources in more orphanages in the surrounding areas.

Study mats: $10, a table: $25, a chair: $25, a bookshelf: $50.
The benefits of a comfortable place to read and study for orphaned children? Priceless.

Through the non-profit works of Nomadic Marketing it is my hope to form these kinds of relationships throughout Asia and the rest of the developing world and to continue to provide small libraries to these orphanages at no cost to them.

But, we need your help.

I would appreciate it greatly if you would place a small financial donation right now by clicking here.

Any help, even just enough to buy a study mat or a table, would be greatly appreciated. Why not donate less than .50 cents per day and take care of a whole orphanage? Especially when your donations are matched in kind by the generosity of the book drives, and together they provide a safe, comfortable and accessible place for these children to learn to grown in this rapidly evolving world.

And, since Nomadic Marketing is a non-profit organization, your donation is 100% tax deductible.

Thank you in advance for your kind support of our efforts.

Sincerely,
Thomas Stader

Books of all kinds play a critical role in all children’s development. Unfortunately, there are very few books beyond children’s school books found in most orphanages. Regardless of any other factors and conditions, a lack of books is an issue in and of itself. Having additional books available helps to encourage independent learning, intellectual curiosity, and a lifelong passion for reading. Orphanage Head Masters often lack the expertise and resources to establish small libraries in their orphanages. In many cases, the only books that are available are not books that pertain to, interest, or are even written for children. Children’s books are a luxury to have in China, and are certainly a rarity in an orphanage.

As the study of English gains popularity across China, all students are studying English from a very early age; however, many students, schools, and orphanages have very few English language books. If there are no books to engage children and help and support their English study, their curiosity, motivation, and ability to learn English will be all but lost.

The first Library Project will be built in a local orphanage in the outskirts of Dalian, China. This orphanage has a remarkable story well worth telling: Twenty years ago, the head master, Madam Jong, owned a very profitable restaurant with her husband. In 1985 the government bought the land that her restaurant was on for quite a bit of money. She was left with the decision to either purchase another restaurant or to do something different. She chose the latter.

Over the next 20 years she took in over 30 children and raised them as her own. She receives no money from the Chinese Government, and relies on the local community for donations. She also started a small factory recycling scrap metal to raise a consistent flow of cash for her humanitarian projects.

Two years ago I personally volunteered at this particular orphanage teaching English to a few children. What makes this orphanage different from many others that you’ll find is the overwhelming sense of family. Each child in the group, ranging from six months to 17 years old, calls each other brothers and sisters. Madam Jong happily takes on the position of Mother.

However, one of the necessary things that this amazingly nurturing orphanage is missing is books. It has about ten beaten up books on an old bookshelf, and that is the extent of the library. Nomadic Marketing’s Library Project’s goal is to get them five hundred children’s books, and a comfortable useful place to read them in.

The second Library Project orphanage is something altogether different from the first. This orphanage is more of a home for street children and functions as a halfway house for poor homeless children living on the streets in Dalian, China. The number of homeless orphans living there ranges from 10 to 30 children at a time. The function of this orphanage is to find a permanent place for the children to live - not to provide a place with a sense of family.

When I visited this orphanage, the children were not overly friendly. The newest child to arrive had a black eye from a fight the night before. The children are quiet, waiting, and guarded. Most have been through a continuing lifetime of hell.

This orphanage has promised that they will provide a small room to house the books. This will give The Library Project the opportunity to build a space for the children to relax, be comfortable and learn in. Posters will be on the walls, and tables, chairs and bookshelves filled with modern children’s books will be in this room.

But the most important thing that this room will represent to the children is a place to relax, learn, grow and feel secure in while they wait to be placed in a permanent orphanage.
